ABOUT THE PRODUCT

Award-winning photographer Barbara D. Livingston traveled across North America in search of the most unusual and uniquely colored equines. The result is Horses: In Living Color, a breathtaking collection of more than 175 photos.

Horses: In Living Color features equines ranging from paint-colored wild Assateague ponies to striking brindle warmbloods. Livingston captures not only the colorful but the rare, including the spotted Knabstrupper, whose numbers in the United States are estimated at 100; Lightning, America’s only diving horse; and the endangered Przewalski’s Horse. One painterly portrait captures three white Thoroughbred mares jogging through the brush in Oregon's desert land, while in another, a coal-black Friesian mare whose mane nearly reaches the ground, curiously eyes the photographer.

Livingston's camera also recorded unusual markings such as Birdcatcher ticks, Bend Or spots, and striped hooves. But Horses: In Living Color is far from just another breed book. Livingston handles each subject with immense respect and admiration, working carefully with lighting, patterns, and backgrounds to create a beautifully artistic homage to the horse.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

  • "The title of this fifth book of horse photography by noted race horse photographer, Barbara Livingston, tells it all – be prepared to be delighted, astounded and amazed by the magnificent and unusual color of the horses and the artistry she employs in her works."
    -LuAnne Levens, Equiery, Dec. issue.
  • "Horses: In Living Color is an astonishingly beautiful coffee-table book of full color photography capturing all manner of equines at their finest. From show horses to work horses to wild horses, a vast diversity of breeds are portrayed; all are vividly beautiful. Some of the most striking photographs portray horses in mid-gallop, but others show them browsing among wild flowers, displaying their regalia in a show, or simply doing an honest day's work. Horses: In Living Color truly lives up to its title, and is an exquisite gift book for anyone who fancies these intelligent and energetic creatures. Highly recommended."
    -Midwest Book Review
  • "Livingston is a two-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Photography, and her four previous books have dealt with the equine breed nearest and dearest to her heart, the Thoroughbred. In Horses: In Living Color, however, she branches out to embrace the species as a whole. The result is a collection of photographs that alternately display the magnificence, fragility, beauty, and brilliance of horses of all shapes, sizes, and - of course - colors."
    -Claire Novak, NTRA.com
  • "Throughout its 224 glossy pages, Horses: In Living Color explores the patterns and tones of horses of a variety of breeds. From Knapstruppers to Fjords, Paints to Rocky Mountain Horse, Livingston captures the most beautiful horses in North America in her coffee table book. Perfect for a Christmas gift."
-Paint Horse Connection, December 2009 issue
